1965 Ford Mustang GT/Pony overview

1965 Ford Mustang REAL FACTORY GT. Fair Starting Price – NO RESERVE! Everyone uses “barn find” when listing cars these days and uses “GT” when describing any Mustang with an emblem. This car has firm evidence of both. I have the car’s history back to 1970. It was owned by the same owner until 2014. Upon graduating from college and acquiring a new car in 1973-74, he put this GT in the family horse barn in the US Southwest. I have been in contact with the owner. He says his father started the car regularly and it sat covered. In 2014, it was dusted off and a family mechanic got it road ready and it was again registered. It then passed through another owner and I acquired the car. As you can see, I have a photo received from the owner showing his 1972 wedding day in the car (as a GT of course). The funniest thing about this photo is that the exact spots of the shaving cream are apparent on the paint loss/patina on the car’s (still original) Prarie Bronze paint! The car shows 81,000 miles which matches the story from the 43 year owner (and the condition of the car) as well as an oil change marking in the door jam from 1978.

Car’s vin and data plate are shown:

“A” Code original 289 with a casting date of 5C23 (March 23, 1965) – a couple of months before car assembly

Car – 65B/P Color/Trim 68/Date 09T/DSO 55/Axle1/Trans 6 = Hardtop Luxury/Prarie Bronze/June 9 build/St. Louis DSO/3.00:1 Rear/C-4 Automatic

I have only found ONE mechanical component on this car that does not verify as factory original. The C-4 has a stamp of RF-DUAP7006C (early 70s). It appears relatively new/reconditioned so I would not be surprised if it was replaced in the 2014 dustoff. The seams of the interior floors look to have been brushed with POR 50 – perhaps during the 2014 clean up.

Carb – Original C5ZFF – date stamped 5/27/65 – rebuilt and replated to factory 2 months ago.

Correct stampings also evident on differential, exhaust manifolds, all body panels, bumpers, glass, valences, washer pump/motor, intake, seat frames, air conditioning components, valve covers, etc. All original trim in place and in great shape. Original trumpet tips no longer in place.

Car is particularly unique as a) factory air GT (compressor is out of car but part of sale – removed only to install rebuilt carb and original style fuel line) and b) equipped with dealer ordered AM/FM radio with trunk mounted reverb (radio and reverb not working at moment). Officially mustang not offered with AM/FM in 65 but research shows that, by late spring, dealers could order them. This one is date stamped April 22, 1965.

TRUE FACTORY GT: See 1972 photo, A code, upgraded springs, 13/16 sway bar, tagged, correct quick ratio power steering box, upgraded gauges, amp sensor, Pony interior, GT dash and glove box, tail lights operate with fog lights (original wiring harness), front discs with original proportioning valve, exhaust reinforcement plates and correct holes (rear floor and frame), correct and original GT emblems and striping and chrome hood molding

OTHER FACTORY OPTIONS: AC, PS, styled steel wheels (original), deluxe Pony interior, padded visors, day/night mirror, front seat belts with retractors, full length console, tinted glass, antennae and deluxe steering wheel.

Car still wears its original Prarie Bronze paint. Interior remarkably original and nice – see photos. Car runs well. I have replaced plugs, re-set timing and done the carb. This winter, a compression test showed a remarkable 162/160/160/160/155/160/158/162. Currently registered and operable.

RECENTLY DONE TO THIS GT: Seam sealer and undercoating painstakingly stripped from car over several months. Insides of fenders, bottoms of floors, wheel wells taken to bare metal and lightly sprayed with primer only. New tires. Extensive, professional carb rebuild and replate. The only known non-operative item is the original windshield washer fluid pump.

WHAT THE CAR NEEDS: The car needs a) new trunk dropdowns (both sides), b) rear outer wheel well patch or replace (both sides), c) quarter panel partial or patch and perhaps small inner wheel well patch (driver side only). The story I have received is that, when in storage, someone sprayed “Great Stuff” foam down into the corners of the trunk to keep the mice out. Bad news seems to be it was a conduit for moisture and condensation. To me, this is the only logical explanation since, even in stripping the entire floor, inner fenders, wheel wells, etc. the only other rust I have found is a hole in the bottom of the battery tray. The car does have typical nicks and dings for a 50+ year old car and the passenger fender has 4 small holes where the same owner told me his father did a “farm fix” to pull out a dent. I also removed the factory inside fender splash shields when I stripped the undercoating and dirt, etc. I have not replaced them yet but they are obviously very inexpensive. I expect the new owner will either put this on the road and have fun as an original with nice patina, or restore it completely.

Car will convey with Connecticut Bill of Sale. CT does not offer titles on cars more than 20 years old (see http://www.ct.gov/dmv/cwp/view.asp?a=816&Q=244698). I have copies of prior titles on the car and the car is currently registered. I have original dealer brochures, owner's manual and keys.

This GT is available for inspection by appointment in Connecticut. I will also answer any questions the best I can. It is a 52 year old car so it is being sold “as is / where is” – I’ve relayed my best available information.

This car is selling at NO RESERVE with an opening bid price of far less than you can get if you auction the motor, interior, body panels and GT components – heck, the radio and mint original wood wheel cost a fortune. I am not a dealer - this is a car I bought and cleaned up for myself/family. Car must go. I have another car I want to focus on and college expenses push sale. The car runs out great but I would recommend a trailer pickup obviously. It's 50 plus years old and my maximum trip with it has been about 25 miles. I also have not done the brakes on the car which I would do before any longer trip.

Winning bidder MUST make $1,000 non-refundable deposit within 72 hours of auction end via wire transfer, fedexed bank check or cash. BALANCE DUE within 7 days or BEFORE ANY THOUGHT OF PICKING THE CAR UP – Balance only accepted as CASH or bank wire transfer (unless received in time to clear before 7 days are up). Car does not move until full funds have cleared. 52 year old car is of course AS IS - all sales final. Please, no help selling, no trades, no financial shenanigans. I reserve the right to withhold sale if your feedback is negative or insufficient.
